Learning Basic Sight & High Frequency Words

Dear Parents,

Your child would have brought back a sheet of paper with 'Basic Sight Words' and '100 High Frequency Words' on it.

I have gone through these words with the children in class already and will continue to quiz them from time to time. Please go through the list regularly with your child. I hope that they will be able to recognize and pronounce the words by the end of term 1.

What exactly are "basic sight words?" These are words that good readers may instantly recognize without having to "figure them out." There are two reasons why sight words are an essential component of good reading. First of all, many of these words do not sound like their spellings might suggest, so "sounding them out" would be unproductive. Also, a good reader really can’t afford the time to dwell on too many words, or he may lose the speed and fluency necessary for determining the author’s message.

High frequency words are the words that appear most often in printed materials. Learning to recognize high-frequency words by sight is critical to developing fluency in reading.

English Unit 1 - Going to School

Hi all!

In a section of Unit 1, the children learnt about the parts of their body. To integrate Science in their learning, they were taught the 5 senses. We had this experiential activity where the children were given some salt and sugar to taste. This little exercise helped them to understand the sense, 'taste'. Also, perfume and vinegar were used to evoke their sense of smell. Enjoy the photos!

Things to note [Term 1 Week 3/ 22 - 26 Jan]

Hello!

Some things to note for this week.

1) Mental Sums 2 --> 25th Jan (Thursday)
Children do not need to study for Mental Sums. It is just a short quiz to gauge pupils' learning in the classroom. Do not be too alarmed if your child did not score well for the 1st Mental Sums - Spelling of numbers 1 - 10. I guess they are still not too sure with the spelling of the words.

2) Class Photo taking --> 25th Jan (Thursday)
Please ensure that your child wears their school uniform on Thursday. This shouldn't be a problem since they do not have PE or Gym on that day. Their hair and uniform should be neat and tidy as far as possible. I hope that there will be full attendance on that day as it would be our 1st CLASS PHOTO! Details on the purchase of the photos would come later.

3) Money matters
You would have received a letter regarding the payment of $20 (photocopying services of worksheets) and $2 (photo for dossier). Please note that I have received $2 from every child last week already. Some children gave me $22 in total today, in which I have returned their $2 back to them. Kindly check with your child.
You are only required to pay $20 for photocopying services only.

4) Signing and filing of worksheets
By this week, you would have received the following worksheets. Please go through each worksheet to have an idea of how your child is coping in class. When the need arises, I would write some comments like 'Please use a ruler' and 'Please write neatly'. I hope that you would help your child to improve in the areas mentioned. After going through, please sign the worksheets and have your child bring them back to school. I will check and have the children file them in their Red, Green and Blue files accordingly.

(Red - pages from English Workbook; pages that are coloured, Green - English Worksheets, Blue - pages from Maths Workbook + Homework book + Worksheets)

- English Workbook pages [pages are coloured]
- English Worksheets
- Maths Workbook pages
- Maths Homework Book pages [height of pages are taller]

Thank you!

Recess with P5 buddies

Dear all,

The 'Couragers' spent their first 2 weeks of recess with their P5 buddies. The young ones are now capable of buying food, playing and visiting the toilet on their own. The children really enjoyed their time with their buddies and I would like to thank the P5 pupils for staying back after their curriculum time to take care of the little ones. They did a wonderful job and showed the patient, responsible and nurturing side of themselves. Below are some photos I've taken. Enjoy!

Phototaking & some info

Dear all,

As mentioned in the previous post, phototaking will be on 18th Jan, this coming Thursday. Please give your child $2 for payment of the photos. There will be a total of 4 photos, from which one will be taken for their student dossier profile. The remaining photos will be given to your child. Please ensure your child is neatly attired in uniform and I hope that there will be full attendance on that day!

Note: I've uploaded the various class information on the right side bar. Alternatively, you can click on the following links for them.
I hope these links will be useful in helping your child familiarize him/herself with his/her roles in the classroom. I seek parents' help in training your child in these aspects. Thank you.

Some updates - Term 1 Week 2

Dear all,

Here are some updates and information for the week.

Discipline
I have realized that some of the children are still in transition mode as they do not take instructions well, run around in class and talk when the teacher is talking. This happens not only in the classroom but in the hall as well! Of course, I understand that they are still young and have lots to learn and that is precisely the point that we should start them off on the right path when they are still at an impressionable age. I hope to get parents' support when I assert a certain amount of strictness whenever the children get out of hand. I would appreciate any form of advice from parents as to how discipline can be maintained in 1 Courage.

Fruity Friday
In KCPPS, a timeslot on Fridays is set aside for eating fruits. I have decided to have this fruit eating session after the children's gym lesson. This session is to promote healthy eating. Please ensure your child brings a slice of fruit or some cut fruits on Fridays - apples, bananas, cut melon slices and grapes [preferably seedless] are encouraged. Refrain from packing bulky, 'messy' or 'seedy' fruits such as rambutans and lychees. Remember to bring your fruits!

JOURNAL
I've collected one jotter book from the children for Journal Writing. This journal is an outlet for the children to write/draw anything that they wish, to me. I will pen down my responses to them through their journals too. In this way, I will be able to know them better, and vice versa. It is also a good way to get children interested in writing and expressing themselves. I've given the children the topic, 'Myself' to get them started for their 1st entry. They do not have to write alot, just 2 -3 sentences will be good enough for a start. I will give out their journals every Friday and hope to get an entry every Monday. =)

SPELLING
Spelling will commence on 31st Jan, Wed [1.00pm- 1.30pm] as shown on the list and subsequent spellings on the following Wednesdays. For a start, only 5 words will be tested but the list will increase to 10 words as the children get accustomed to spellings. Please help me reiterate to your child that they are not allowed to refer to their spelling lists or copy from their friends during Spelling. Click
here for the spelling list or refer to the side bar on the right of this blog.

MENTAL SUMS

Mental Sums will commence on 18th Jan Thur [4.30pm - 5.00pm] and will be a weekly affair. Mental sums will go like this. The teacher reads out a question [according to topic taught in class] and children will write down the answer in their book. A total of 5-10 short questions will be tested.[depending on topic] After each Mental Sums exercise, I will be pasting the questions onto their exercise books so that parents will be aware of the questions tested. Like Spelling, pupils are not allowed to discuss or copy their friend's answers.

PHOTOTAKING
The children will be having phototaking on 18th Jan [Thursday]. This is for their Student SMRT Card. Please ensure your child is neatly attired in their uniform on that day. I hope there will not be absentees on that day as far as possible!!! =)

Enjoy your weekend and God bless!
